Before the Invention of the Power Plant.
There were many differences in the world as we know it today. Without light bulbs, people would have to finish all their tasks from sunrise to sunset -- or do it in the dark. Also, everything was either man-powered or was powered by a animals. Either way people had to man the equipment constantly or care for animals -- and clean up their waste. Imagine having to entertain yourself without a TV or computer. Before 1935, only one out of ten rural homes had electricity.
Without electricity, people had to keep dim, gas-burning lights in their houses or candles. They came with a fire hazard, too. Many houses burned down because of candle fires. Also, they had to be turned on at the light source with a source of fire each time, and candles were also expensive, and buying many at a time was necessary.
Electricity wasn't just used for light, but other things too. Before electricity, people had to wash your clothes in a washtub. People had to wash clothes by hand on a stove. This process took much more time than the common wash and dry cycle now days.
Shelf life for many foods wasn't quite the same at the time. Without electricity, things couldn't be refrigerated to really cold temperature, therefore fresh foods would spoil quickly. Also, you couldn't get ice or frozen products easily at the time throughout the year.
Another very important invention because of the power plant is the telephone. Without telephones, overseas communication would be very slow because the only way to communicate was through mail, which needed to go on a boat.
As you can see, life before the power plant was very different.
